Melbourne Centre is one of the world’s most advanced air traffic control centres. It is one of Airservices Australia’s two major Centres – the other being in Brisbane.
The Centre was created through the major modernisation of air traffic technology in Australia. The Advanced Australian Air Traffic Management (TAAATS) project was the largest aviation infrastructure project in Australia’s history.
The first air traffic control operations commenced in Melbourne Centre in November 1998. By 31 January 2000, the transition to full operations was complete.
Melbourne Centre provides safe, efficient and effective air traffic management services in the Melbourne Flight Information Region (FIR) to meet the needs of its customers.
The Melbourne FIR includes the southern half of Australia and the Southern and Indian oceans. Representing six per cent of the world's surface, our service delivery extends from Indonesia to the South Pole and from halfway to New Zealand to halfway to Africa.
Approximately 2350 flights are processed daily in the FIR. And we work closely with our FIR neighbours including South Africa, Mauritius, Male (The Maldives), Sir Lanka, Indonesia and Auckland (New Zealand).
Melbourne Centre is directly responsible for Enroute services throughout the FIR.
The Centre also sequences 60 per cent of the traffic into Sydney. Melbourne enroute air traffic controllers number 206.
Terminal Navigation services and Terminal Radar services for Melbourne and Canberra are provided from the Melbourne facility with the Sydney, Adelaide and Perth terminal units managed from Melbourne. There are 152 terminal area controllers.
The Melbourne to Sydney city pairing remains consistently one of the world’s top ranked city pairings for frequency of aircraft movements.
