Avalon Tower is currently opened twice a year for the two Grand Prix in March and October (approx. four days each). Every second year the Avalon Airshow requires approx. one week of Air Traffic Control with up to 200 movements per day. There is no requirement for Air Traffic Control for training flights in the immediate future.
The Tower is a steel framed/clad structure similar in design to the towers at Moorabbin, Adelaide and Albury Airports.
Avalon Airport is situated on the northern coast of Corio Bay, approximately 20 kilometres northeast of Geelong. From the tower the views extend to Port Philip Bay, Melbourne city, Geelong, Point Cook and the You Yangs Ranges.
Facilities
Avalon Airport runways are 18/36 (3048M). A single ILS is installed on runway 18. All other runways are served by non-precision approaches using VOR, DME or GPS.
