Jandakot Tower

Tower Information, Views and History

Location - Jandakot Airport, Jandakot, Western Australia

Height - 25m

Date Constructed - 1965

Jandakot Tower is positioned to the North of the parallel runways, about mid way from the thresholds. There is a public viewing area just to the south of the tower, with a mini control tower for the kids to play in. The controllers face to the south towards Forrestdale Lake, to overlook the runways.

The designated training area is also to the south of Jandakot. The Darling Range is 10 kms to the east, running north/south, and the coast is 10 kms to the west. The view to the south is mainly semi-rural with a large amount of trees.

To the west is mainly light industrial, with Austal Ships and Oceanfast Yachts on the coast at Cockburn. Looking towards the north is residential areas spreading to Kings Park & Perth city. Perth Tower is to the north/east, with more residential areas to the east. Over the years has seen a large increase in residential areas closer to the airport boundary, and Jandakot Airport Holdings (Airport owner) encourages pilots to 'fly neighbourly' so as to reduce the noise impact on these residential areas. Jandakot airport is home to the Royal Aero Club, the oldest aero club in Australia, and largest in southern hemisphere.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service has a large base at Jandakot, and there are a number of other flying organizations based here, including some that specialize in training of overseas pilots for large non-Australian commercial airlines.

Facilities

Jandakot Airport runways are 24R/06L (1392M), 24L/06R (1150M) and 12/30 (990M). The only navigation aid at Jandakot is an NDB. Instrument approaches use the Jandakot NDB, Perth VOR and Perth DME or GPS.
