Australian ATM Strategic Plan

What is a Flex Track

The Manual of Air Traffic Services Chapter 10 describes Flex Tracks as: "A non-fixed ATS route calculated on a daily basis to provide the most efficient operational flight conditions between specific city pairs".

Ultimately, Flex Tracks will provide cost saving opportunities for airlines and benefits to the environment through significant reduction in fuel burn.

The Flex Tracks project, commissioned by Airservices Australia, is being achieved through the collaborative efforts of a number of major Australian aviation industry stakeholders. It will deliver international Flex Tracks across the Australian airspace for use by international aircraft equipped with appropriate navigation and communication systems.

In January 2005, a meeting between Airservices Australia and key international airlines heralded the start of the Australian Organised Track Structure (AUSOTS) to deliver Flex Tracks between key international gates and Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.

As a result of this collaborative effort, international Flex Tracks between key international gates and Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney, will be implemented in June 2005 through the Australian Organised Track Structure (AUSOTS).
