Flying Around - Perth
Within the Perth area there are three busy aerodromes:
Perth International (YPPH) is the capital city aerodrome. It operates on a 24 hr basis.
Jandakot (YPJT) is a GAAP zone.
Tower hours of operations:

- Outside of TWR hrs CTAF(R) procedures
- Warning: Be aware that heavy jet aircraft operate 500ft from the base of controlled airspace and the Jandakot CTAF(R) and generate wake turbulence. You are responsible for the wake turbulence separation.

Where do VCAs occur around Perth?
- High concentration of VCA’s occur departing Jandakot off RWY 06 climbing outside of controlled airspace due to Perth control zone immediately adjacent.
- Departing to the west controlled airspace lower level step (1500FT) until Fremantle Golf course
- Departing to the East/South East controlled airspace lower level step (2000FT) until 5NM Jandakot
- On climb to the East past Canning Dam controlled airspace lower level (2000FT) to the North of the VFR route
- On the coastal VFR route around City Beach lower level (1500FT)

RNAV approaches into Rottnest Island and Jandakot require ATC clearance.
Two recommended VFR routes clear of the Perth Control zone are established within the Perth area (check VTC):
- Coastal VFR route between Fremantle and Mullaloo Pt (race track pattern – inland northbound and seawards southbound)
- VFR route 4 – may require clearance from Pearce
Several Restricted/Danger Areas exist within the Perth area, which include:
Two sets of military restricted areas:

Air Traffic Services
TMA airspace is split North and South of the delineation line through Perth Airport.
TMA South controls traffic into and out of Jandakot. Dependant on the runway configuration TMA south maybe either approach or departures.
Approach frequency 123.6MHz
Departures frequency 118.7MHz
Extensive radar coverage exists within the Perth area, allowing Perth Radar Information Services (RIS), known as ‘Perth Radar’ on 135.25 to provide traffic information, position information, weather and operational information services subject to controller workload.
Clearance delivery service is provided for aircraft entering TMA airspace. Frequency 132.95
Supporting these positions are:
- Flow – providing sequencing services
- Operational Supervisor – overall supervision
If in doubt, ask ATC.

Note that ATC is there to help if needed, don’t be afraid to ask for assistance. Also, ATC are not the police of the air, they simply try to make all operations as safe as possible. |
