Sam Basnayake, Service Assurance

Meet Sam Basnayake, a Service Assurance Lead at Airservices Australia.

Safety is the core of what we do. And I've dedicated my career to it. My team and I work tirelessly to connect people to their world safely.

My name is Sam. I'm a service assurance lead here at Airservices Australia.

We want our traveling public to arrive safely at their destinations. And part of what we do contributes to that. We help keep Australia safe.

There's a huge team behind the scenes working to improve our safety, to understand our safety measures, to improve our safety metrics. And the idea is that there's multiple barriers in place to prevent more serious occurrences.

I'm extremely enthusiastic about getting everybody from A to B safely. I wanted to get into something that I felt was helping people, I suppose, and this is where it's at.

When you're driving to work and you see the planes taking off or landing, it really hits home the impact that safety has on the public.

I am super proud of what I do. My team go above and beyond to ensure that the Australian airspace is safe.

Virdeep Kaur, Technical Officer

Meet Virdeep Kaur, a Technical Officer based at our Brisbane Centre.

(wind blowing)

(background music + plane engine revving)

When I see a plane take flight, my mind switches on. It is my responsibility to ensure that each flight can communicate and navigate to reach its destination very safely.

My name is Virdeep Kaur. I'm technical officer at Airservices Australia.

Growing up, I was very close to my father and he always used to work on radars and satellites. And when he passed away, I was like, I need to do something in his memory. And today I'm in Airservices. We monitor all the technology that's related to the aviation industry and we monitor them 24-7, 365 days.

To go above and beyond, it's not sticking only to one screen. You have to actually apply your brain. You have to think beyond a point to keep service first, to keep the sky safe for everyone out there.

I wanted to travel one day in the airplane. Today I am in the aviation industry and I am living my dream.

Every time I'm traveling now, I know and I trust all those people who are taking care of everything in the background.

Shenuka Jeevaratne, Network Capacity Coordinator

Meet Shenuka Jeevaratne, a Network Capacity Coordinator.

(wind blowing)

(background music + plane engine revving)

Since I was a little boy growing up in Sri Lanka, I knew I wanted to work in aviation. Now I'm proud to be a part of the team, controlling Australia's air traffic network.

My name is Shenuka, I work as a National Capacity Coordinator for Airservices Australia.

I manage air traffic flow between Australia's major ports, that means Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, and essentially get you from point A to point B, efficiently. My job is a giant game of chess. You're always thinking about what the next move is. Because Australia is such a big country, you have a wide variety of situations, strong winds in Melbourne. At the same time you might have a far greater risk in Sydney. At the same time you might be having thunderstorms in Perth.

At Airservices we have thousands of people working together to make sure that you get to your destination on time and safely.

And every day when I come to work, if I see that the network is maintained well, I'm happy and I feel like I help Australia take a step forward.

Mu Yan, Head of Customer Engagement

Meet Mu Yan, Head of Customer Engagement for Airservices Australia.

(wind blowing)

(background music + plane engine revving)

Every day we go above and beyond to unite the people and businesses of aviation, aligning them to create a world leading industry here in Australia.

My name is MuYan, I'm the head of customer engagement at Airservices Australia.

My role is to create connections between Airservices and the aviation industry. I'm a aviation nerd, I connect my day to day to how I can make a little bit difference for our industry from solving small problems to getting involved in big things for the future of aviation.

Airservices Australia is absolutely critical to the future of aviation both in Australia and globally. We manage approximately 11% of the global airspace, a significant proportion of flights from Australia transits through our neighboring countries in order for people and goods to reach almost every part of the world.

And I think being part of Airservices, that is so critical to connect families, friends, and create opportunities for people is phenomenal.

Sameer Khan, Technical Officer (Radio)

Meet Sameer Khan, a Technical Officer (Radio) based at Brisbane Airport.

(wind blowing)

(airplane engine roaring)

I love knowing my job helps dreams come true.

I'm Sameer Khan, I'm an airways technical officer specialising in navigation and surveillance equipment.

It's been a dream to do a job like this. It's very challenging. We like solving problems and fixing stuff. That is why we are here, to keep the airways safe, to keep the public safe, to help planes get where they're going.

Our job requires us to be extremely focused, extremely aware of the situation, especially with what you're doing, with the equipment you're working with. You could be working with air traffic controllers and you could be working with the firers all at once at the same day, and it's the same problem. The end result is safe skies. I think that's what keeps them going every day.

And though you still may never see us, know we'll be there, all around you, lifting you up like air.

Jamie Lankford, AIS/Aeronautical Charting Specialist

Meet Jamie Lankford, an AIS/Aeronautical Charting Specialist.

(wind blowing)

(background music + plane engine revving)

I'm really proud to be laying the foundations for the future of flight across Australia.

My name is Jamie, I work at Airservices in the Aeronautical Charting Team.

(gentle music builds)

My purpose is to put aeronautical data on maps for pilots and controllers, helping keep the sky safe. It's a great team environment. We all do go above and beyond and make sure that the end product is safe and usable by pilots around the whole world, not just locally.

Pretty rewarding actually to sit back when you're going on a plane or seeing an aircraft fly over and go off and play a part in that aircraft, doing its thing.

(plane engine)

Airservices manage navigation aids so aircraft can find where they're going, produce charts, aeronautical data. We've got aviation rescue firefighting, we've got air traffic controllers, a lot of airspace managers so it's actually quite a lot that keep the skies moving.

And although you may never see us, just know we'll be there, all around you, lifting you up like air.

Kyran Hine, Technical Officer (Radio)

Meet Kyran Hine, a Technical Officer (Radio) based at Brisbane Airport.

(wind blowing)

(background music + plane engine revving)

I feel incredibly proud helping to connect the aviation industry, keeping people safe as they fly across the sky.

My name is Kyran Hine and I am a radio technician for Airservices Australia.

I love my job a lot. You know what sort of impact you have. Take the ILS for instance. It assists when the weather's poor, knowing that we've kept that equipment operating. The pilot when he's operating on that system is a hundred percent confident that he's gonna touch down safely each and every time.

I wanted to do a job that was technical, but with my hands. At the time my dad was a fire fighter for Airservices and I'm here today to carry on the name. He said, "I've just had a daughter and maybe she can become an air traffic controller and we can have the trifecta." (laughing)

I think that's the great thing about Airservices is there's so many interconnecting cogs and there's a huge sense of camaraderie, all playing our part to make the wheel in the sky keep churning.

And although you may never see us, just know we'll be there, all around you, lifting you up like air.
